Penny rugs were originally made in the 1800’s. Victorian women
gathered scraps of wool and wool felt from old clothes or hats
and used coins as templates to create designs for mats and rugs.
Each decorative wool “penny” was appliquéd in a blanket-stitch
fashion to a wool background.
Our collection of beautiful penny rugs are handmade using an
adapted modern day “penny rug” technique. These rugs can be used
as a rug or a wall hanging. They feature sleeves on the back so
that they may be hung vertically or horizontally.
